Title: A Tale of Two Proteins: Plant vs. Animal for Fitness

Description: There are different types of carbs, different types of fat, but not many people talk about how the different types of protein vary. There’s been a lot of recent attention around plant-based proteins, but how do they differ from animal-based proteins and how do they impact health and physical performance? With the protein trend still going strong, it is likely that consumers and athletes will seek a deeper understanding of protein, beyond just how much they should eat. This session will examine amino acids, explain how protein quality is determined, and look at differences in plant and animal proteins, including common misperceptions. It will also provide practical recommendations for meeting clients’ dietary protein needs through food.

This session will provide practical recommendations for optimal recovery for the recreational athlete.

Title: Nutritional Myths and Practices of the Elite Athlete: Implications for Active, Non-Elite Performance

Description: Competitive athletes have come to understand the benefits of good nutrition to athletic performance. With the dramatic growth in the number of Sports RDs, and the increased number of teams in both the collegiate and professional ranks employing nutrition professionals, today’s athlete is much more versed on the importance of diet to success on the field than were athletes of a generation ago. This is not to say, however, that athletes don’t or can’t fall prey to exotic claims for nutritional products, diets, and supplements that promise enhanced performance, improved physique, or other physical benefits. Through scientific data and anecdotal information culled from real life examples of elite athletes’ dietary practices, this session will provide information on diets, foods, and supplements that have been proven to enhance physical performance, as well as nutritional practices of dubious efficacy. Information on how the non-elite, physically active person can use diet to their advantage will also be discussed.
